TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- New York Yankees starter Carl Pavano's sore back could land him on the disabled list to start the season.

"I'm not banking on him Opening Day," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "There's no rush even right there to have him ready opening day. The thing I think is important is he probably feels better than he did anytime last year."

Pavano missed the second half of last season because of a shoulder injury and finished 4-6 with a 4.77 ERA in 17 starts. His back has bothered him since spring training last year.

"It's progressing," Pavano said. "It feels a lot better. I want to make sure there's no setbacks after what I went through last year."

Right fielder Gary Sheffield is also having back problems. He didn't work out Sunday because of back spasms.

Sheffield is not expected to miss more than a couple days. The back flared up after he took extra batting practice on Saturday.

"I took more swings than usual," Sheffield said. "I've had this before. This is what you get when you over do it too early. It's just real tight. It will be fine."

Likely opening day starter Randy Johnson threw 68 pitches in his second batting practice session, breaking the bat of new center fielder Johnny Damon.

"I'm throwing everything that I throw right now," Johnson said. "The more I throw it, the more effective it will be. I feel like I'm in pretty good shape."

Johnson could make his spring training debut Friday or Saturday.

Torre has been impressed with left-hander Al Leiter, who opted not to retire during the offseason and is in camp as a non-roster player.

"What I've seen so far, I like him," Torre said. "When you look at it, there's no room. But if somebody makes a case, you've got to figure something out. That's the way I look at it."

Notes: Reliever Tanyon Sturtze (tired shoulder) had his third bullpen session. He expects to do it one more time before throwing batting practice. ... RHP Kyle Farnsworth threw BP for the first time. The Yankees are taking a slow approach with him this spring. ... RHP Mike Mussina and 2004 first-round draft pick RHP Philip Hughes are the scheduled starters for Tuesday's intrasquad game. RHP Scott Erickson will also pitch. ... Yankees vice president and spring training instructor Billy Connors is expected to miss some time tending to a personal matter.

He was suppose to be this huge steal last year but he is the biggest bust

Kevin Brown, Jason Giambi, Jarret Wright, or Randy Johnson might challenge for that title.

I'd rather he take his time, and start the season on the DL then to rush now and end up missing half the season.

I'm shocked! Speechless. How? Why?

Giambi and Johnson have been fine for the Yankees. It's not like Steinbrenner and Cashman didn't know that Giambi was juicing when they signed him--you get what you pay for. As for Johnson, he was the ace of the staff last year. When 17 wins and a 3.79 ERA makes you a bust, you know that you've got a helluva player.

Brown and Wright...absolutely.

Whoa, back up. You never said anything about living up to their contracts. All I'm saying is that they both have been very good for the Yankees. That's undeniable.

The Yankees signed Giambi when he was the best hitter in the AL. They had to overpay him to come to NY, he would've taken the 6 years, $91M offered from Oakland. He hasn't lived up to his contract, but he hasn't been a total bust.

Wait a minute, I just said a Cashman move didn't "live up to his contract". How can that be?!?!? I'm the guy who says Cashman can do no wrong!!!!!!!!

The both of you are trying to suggest Giambi isn't a total failure yet that is exactly what he is. He went form MVP to an emabarassment... at his point his 19 million dollar contract is considered tolerable if he plays to the level of Hinske.. who makes 3 million.

Isn't that what Cahsman's job is... to get players to live up to their contracts?

Giambi had long hair and used to display his tattoos in Oakland. He came to New York and was emasculated.

That HGH is perfectly normal! Jason just happens to be having a very late growth spurt! Who are we to stop him from growing up.
