Updating a previous item, restricted free agent LG Logan Mankins requested Monday that the Patriots trade him.

"I want to be traded," said Mankins, one of the NFL's best guards. "I don't need to be here anymore. This is about principle with me and keeping your word and how you treat people." It sounds like the sides have had no substantive talks about a long-term extension, perhaps because the Patriots don't believe in investing high-dollar contracts on offensive guards. Mankins does plan to sign his one-year tender before Tuesday's deadline, but apparently only to avoid having it reduced by $1.7 million. Jun. 14 - 3:38 pm et

they should be able to get a couple first rounders from the raiders

Quick....let's trade Harris for Mankins.....before Cutler becomes available again.

He'll probably go to Oakland for their 1st rounder in 2012.

I'm happy about this... of course unless some idiot ala Raiders offer them a gazillion picks...

I love it. Money buys happiness. This is happening to several NFL teams. Jets - Revis, Colts - Wayne, Pats - Mankins, etc.

The business side of sports.

He'll probably re-sign soon and talk about how much he loves the Patriots.

From rotoworld:

The Patriots reportedly had a five-year contract offer on the table for LG Logan Mankins that would've paid him $7 million per season.
The offer, presumably made earlier this offseason, was reportedly on the table for "a significant period of time." The deal would've made Mankins one of the NFL's five highest paid offensive guards. Mankins apparently wants to be the richest guard in the league. On Tuesday, the Patriots are expected to formally lower Mankins' tender offer from $3.268 million to $1.54 million.

The Patriots' mystique is wearing off. Good players aren't willing to take the "Patriot Discount" anymore.

Imagine how Tom Brady's contract negotiation will play out after a year behind a Mankins-less line. Bill B's in deep Barney!

7 mill a season for a G isn't exactly discount money!!!

Top 5 money isn't a discount. This guy wants to be top paid.

Mankins is gonna lose in this game. He'd be better off signing the tender, and moving along next year. Now they'll plug someone else in (he's a great guard, but guards are replaceable), and he'll lose service time and any leverage moving forward.

Imagine what your stud center is gonna want. Revis already wants to be #1 paid at his position.... he isn't looking to take any hometown discount.

Oh, I completely agree. But gone are the days when excellent players signed for less than their value because they could play for the Patriots.

That was only when the Pats were consistently winning it all every year. Now that they are not, who would want to play for a dick like BB for a sub par contract? The players got their rings, time to cash in!!!

At least they waited until they got their ring.

I don't know where folks got the idea that somehow players would just play for less to be on the Pats. It's not a new thing for players to leave them over money.

Samuel, Law, Givens, Branch, Vinatieri....

I'm so glad we passed on Cutler twice. Some of the best moves are the ones you don't make.

I love that people think he won't play. He;s not going to sit out, so unless they trade him he'll play out this year.

Mankins isn't the best guard in the NFL. He shouldn't expect to be paid as such. I can't erase the images of Justin Tuck making him look like a tree stump in the Super Bowl.

Guards are replaceable. The Patriots won Super Bowls with guys like Joe Andruzzi and Stephen Neal. They'll either let him sit out the year or they'll trade him to someone willing to overpay.

???

You make it sound like Andruzzi and Neal were the Pats version of Adrien Clarke and Jacob Bender.

Well, neither of those guys turned down $7M/season.

They were solid here but Neal was a wrestler-turned-football-player and Andruzzi played in NFL Europe and was a Packers cast-off. Mankins was a first-round pick and has made a couple of Pro Bowls, but I can think of at least three guys who are better than him off the top of my head.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that guard doesn't seem to be a position where the team's going to be willing to make any player the highest paid in the league. If sources are right and Mankins turned down 5 years and $35 million, I'd say with 100% confidence that he's played his last game here.

His point i think is that the Patriots have had great success with just getting undrafted free agents and other teams castoffs and turning them into good guards, a team like the Patriots succeeds by not paying anyone except the quarterback as the highest in the league. Mankins is a fool, he should have just signed the 3.4 mil tender then walked at the end of the year, he has no leverage, no one will give up a first and a third for him, and he would be a fool to sit out the year, as he'd be in the same or worse position next year. He should have demanded a trade earlier when he still had the 3.4 as a fallback, now he gets half of that when he is forced to cave, as the Patriots won't trade him unless they get good value.
