Does this make sense? His value is higher than anyone we have ever had on the roster if we could get a teams 1st rd draft pick for the next 4 yrs 2011,2012,2013,2014 that would be insane talk about capitol return I say definately pay the man as the highest paid cb in the NFL, he's facing the top wr from day one and winning the matchups 6yrs 100mil 50mil garaunteed is reasonable in the uncapped year would lock him up.

A combination of both SOMEWHAT. He could be un-tradeable kinda like if Asomugha was traded I'm sure every team getting him would love to re-do his contract.
Difference with Revis is he is ALLLLLLOT younger, so I'm sure there are a few teams out there that would pay him what he wants.
Trading him would be a pain in the ass, and I would never want to do that.

No team would give 4 1st round picks for Revis. I doubt if you could even get two 1st rounders due to the financial compensation Revis would want.

No, Revis will easily generate two firsts and maybe a few more non 1st rounders. Cutler trade got 2 firsts. Revis is probably the best defender in the NFL.

You don't treat a Revis like a Rhodes.

If the Panthers gave up 2 first rounders for Sean Gilbert I'm betting you could find a team to give up 2 first rounders for Revis + lower rounds.

My guess is the way to approach the Revis trade window, if it occurs, is to go into the 2011 draft, if it occurs, with a couple of opportunities in the top 10 on the back burner. If the right player drops to say the 7 or 8 pick you trade Revis for that pick and the 1st rounder the following season. That gives you an instant young fill of your choice, probably in the defensive front 7 or maybe a free safety, and the prospect of another good pick the following season.
The acquiring teams gets the best CB in football (that's what they see him as or they would not make the deal) locked up for 2 more years for 20 million and eventually Revis gets his contract from them.
All of this assumes that Wilson and Cromartie look very good next season and Cromartie is signable at a livable deal.

fuck trading Revis....in any capacity. The Jets and Revis' camp will work it out...i have faith in Tannenbaum.
Ask the Skins' if they'd trade away C.Bailey again in his prime.

From 1999 to 2003 the Redskins went 38-42 with Champ Bailey at CB. They made the playoffs in Bailey's rookie season.
From 2004 to 2008 (the first 5 years after they let go of Bailey) they went 38-42. They made the playoffs twice over that span.
Cornerbacks are not playoff determinitive. Cornerbacks are really not win determinitive unless you have bad cornerbacks.

The comparable deal now would be Darrelle Revis and a second round pick for Chris Johnson. I'd be all over that one. And that's including the fact that Johnson's carries need to go down a lot or the tread will come off pretty quickly.

And they don't win Super Bowls.
7 running backs have been Super Bowl MVP's. 3 safeties join the list. ZERO cornerbacks have been Super Bowl MVP.
Adding Chris Johnson to the Jets next season would make them one of the most potent offenses in the NFL even if Sanchez wasn't completely ready for prime time. Adding him if Sanchez was good to go would probably make the Jets a top 5 offense. That would do more for the Jets chances to win a Super Bowl next season than juggling 3 good to great corners.

yeah...Chris Johnson was a major factor when our defense slapped the Titans around last season.
Sorry, man...we'll have to disagree.....Revis > C.Johnson IMO.
I'm waiting for the "trade Revis for Brady" thread.
It totally makes sense. They both need contracts, and I'm sure Belichick would be down for it. Then we could trade Sanchez for Richard Seymour, and, like, get that whole pass rush thing taken care of. And that would free up Tanny to trade Shaun Ellis for a top tier cornerback....like Revis.

Larry Brown was the Super Bowl MVP of SBXXX for the Cowboys, but he's the only one. And he didn't 'win' SBXXX. He just made some nice plays, and he had plenty of action since Deion Sanders was covering the other side. There have been some SB MVPs that weren't huge factors for their teams until they played in the Super Bowl.
Only 2 cornerbacks have ever been voted DPOY. One of them beat Revis out by 14 votes. Just because it hasn't been done often doesn't mean it's impossible.

Nice catch, I saw Brown in the list of MVP's but I no-brained him into a safety. I guess the idea that a cornerback on the Cowboys other than Deion might win that award just did not register.

THE ORIGINAL_I hear alot of you on this message board talk about how teams get screwed when a player disagrees with the contract that they initially signed and while I am more inclined to the player when they outperform their initial contract and believe the player should receive adequate compensation. I also believe in value and looking at Revis in this situation who many consider the best defensive player in the league is obviously more of a valuable commodity than we realize we traded pics to get him when we had no idea he would be this good now that we know along with all the other teams how good he is we find ourselves in the drivers seat of the best possible situation pay him like he deserves wich will be a monumental contract or make a monumental trade for him neither of the other players we have to resign will bring back a first round pick at this point or opposed to Revis multiple pics.
The logic in this if we resign Revis we might lose some very significant player(s) if we trade him we get multiple first round picks and keep the likes of Holmes, Edwards, Cromartie, Harris, Mangold, Ferguson etc.
I will admitt I am all for keeping Revis and hope they come to terms but I wouldn't disagree with a scenario that allowed us to keep all the aforementioned player(s) and aquire first round talent the for next few years to boot.
For everyone screaming we trade Revis for first rounders (what are we up to now? 4?), who exactly is going to take him for that price? The entire league knows how much he wants, and what they would have to give him if a deal went down. So how many teams would be dumb enough to mortgage their future AND pay a king's ransom? Not happening.
Palantonio reported yesterday the Jets are willing to go to around 13.5 right now. They may have to go a tad higher, but that's about the number everybody sounded happy about back when we thought he wanted 20. If we can't sign Nick, Brick, and Harris working around a deal that size then we are screwed anyway.
He'll be a Jet one way or another this season because he doesn't really have a choice. So will the other three. He's not gonna hold out (for too long), and he's not gonna dog it on the field either, he'll just be another talent auditioning for a new contract.

I would hope they don't go any higher than that 13.5 million you stated. They might have to give him a decent chunk of that in guarantees but if there is a guy that is worth a lot of guaranteed money it would be Revis.

Yes, Ryan's defense is great when the QB gets little time to make decisions. It's not so great when the QB is protected as Peyton Manning was in the second half of the AFC Championship game.
Ryan's defense is great when there is blanket press coverage for 2 seconds at the snap. It's not so great when there is a weak link to find in the coverage because one or more of the defensive backs assigned primary coverage can't jam well and recover to give that 2 seconds of coverage.
The Jet's defense last year would have been even better if they had been able to force more quick throws with a traditional 3-4 pass rush or if the talent in the defensive backfield had been more evenly distributed. Darrelle Revis is a great cornerback, one of the best ever, but he is close to value-less when somebody is getting beaten away from him on the field.
Against the Colts Revis was no factor at all, because the #2 and #3 receivers were beating the Jets like a drum after the initial pressure on Manning was solved and he began to get time to throw the ball.
If the Jets really want to improve the defense they need to get more pressure on the QB. As you say they'd likely be better with Cro and Wilson and a strong pass rush than with Revis, Cro and Wilson and a weak one that relies on safety blitzes for it's pressure.

I would do this deal every day of the week and twice on Sunday. With Johnson the Jet's offense would be elite. Like last year's only the two backs sharing duties both have amazing breakaway ability and can take any play to the house. That in turn would force defenses to play 7 or 8 men in the box on 1st down and would give Sanchez, Cotchery, Holmes, Edwards and Keller the potential for a field day downfield. We're talking a 400+ pt offense here.
The defense might not be as good as last year's but with that offense it'd still be strong enough to make the Jets the main Super Bowl contender in the AFC.

same thing applies with Revis. With Revis, this D becomes elite. Without Revis, you can forget about all the 'exotic blitzes' and get ready to be burned a few times a game. CJ is definitely an elite RB, but Mean Shonn Greene is not too far behind, just hasn't had the chance.

The Jets had the #1 rushing offense in the NFL last year and it didn't win them anything. Chris Johnson is a very good running back, maybe the best in the league, but the difference between a good running back and a great running back over the course of an NFL season is minimal. Maybe 1 or 2 games difference? A RB only touches the ball on running plays, so if a defense just stacks the box and forces you to pass what good is he? The Titans had the best RB in the game last season and finished 8-8. Put in a Thomas Jones and they finish maybe 6-8, 7-9 and still miss the playoffs.
Barry Sanders was the best running back ever and he never brought the Lions anywhere near a superbowl.

The Jets #1 rushing offense last year was a product of a huge number of carries. They could put out the same output with 10% fewer carries with Johnson and Greene as the main backs in the offense.
The difference between a good running back and a great runningback is probably 1 game tops over the course of a season if that (probably not a full game unless you have an all-time great at RB.) The difference between a bad runningback (in the case of a Greene injury this is odds on where the Jets would be) and a great runningback could easily be 2 games or more.
The difference between a good CB and a great CB is probably not half a game over the course of a season. The difference between a bad CB and a great CB could easily be 2 games or more (less likely the Jets wind up with a bad CB given their depth than a bad RB at this point.)
Barry Sanders was a big part of the one season the Lions had a shot at a Super Bowl. Then the overall talent on the team declined and no runningback would have made the difference.
Basically both Johnson and Revis are incapable of carrying the Jets to a Super Bowl. Both are unlikely to produce even a single win for the team based on the position they play. The Jets have real depth at CB and not so much at RB. That means one of their biggest failure points for next season is losing Greene to an injury. I'd trade a great CB for a great RB for next season without thinking too hard about it.

The Titans are 1-3 vs. the Colts with Chris Johnson. They were 2-2 vs. the Colts the 2 years prior to him arriving.
The 2-2 prior included a garbage time win against a Colts team resting their starters in week 17 in 2007 (Jim Sorgi had more passes attempted than Peyton Manning.) Aside from that win the Titans just haven't had all that much success against the Colts over the last 4 seasons. That's mainly because their QB's have been subpar over that timespan and they've had trouble maintaining continuity on offense.
If Sanchez is the real deal then adding Johnson to the mix would likely give the Jets an excellent shot at beating the Colts. If Sanchez is not then they have next to no chance. Revis is immaterial in either scenario because you don't beat Peyton Manning with defensive backs. You beat him with a strong offensive performance, period.
The Colts opponents in their last 12 losses have scored 31, 30, 29, 23, 31, 34, 23, 29, 24, 23, 16 and 28 points. That's an average of 26.75 points a game.

You've probably noticed, but I'm really just being a wise ass turning around your normal CB argument on you.
In the Colts playoff losses in the Manning era, they've scored:
16, 17, 0, 14, 3, 18, 24, 17, 17. That's an average of 14 points a game.

* Exactly ! Cornerback is important but does not make a defense run. A great defense stops the run and that all starts with defensive line.Everything on defense and offense starts with the lines. Id rather have a great defensive lineman than Cornerback anyday. Id rather have a great linebacker than cornerback anyday. As a side note, last year when Jenkins got hurt Ryan knew Pouha could not play noseguard like Jenkins did so he started going to a 4 man defensive (4 down lineman)more often and thats when the defense really started working. In football EVERYTHING starts with the line.

Does this make sense? His value is higher than anyone we have ever had on the roster if we could get a teams 1st rd draft pick for the next 4 yrs 2011,2012,2013,2014 that would be insane talk about capitol return I say definately pay the man as the highest paid cb in the NFL, he's facing the top wr from day one and winning the matchups 6yrs 100mil 50mil garaunteed is reasonable in the uncapped year would lock him up.
you don't really make any sense...
