That's pretty cool, unless you are a Black or Hispanic male.
If that is up to date then this year is way down on average.

If you look at the separation by month and date, you can also see it by year; from that you can see that the homicide rate is down about 35% from last year through whatever day in June corresponds to being "up to date," and is the lowest among all years from 2003-2009.

I thought I was looking at the new stadium seating chart when I opened the link.
I'll take the Left Middle section of the map, it looks like the best and safest.
We'll never see 1990-91 murder levels in NYC again when there were more than 2,000 a year.

This is just asking for there to be a spike in the numbers this summer.

Sroll the bar to 2009...not that many
Edit: it also tells us what we already know...stay out of Harlem and Brooklyn

Look again...there's 170 so far this year. That means there's a shot (no pun intended) NYC could come in below 400 homicides for the year which would be unheard of.

Guys while I know the numbers are low (they are especially compared to pre-Guliani years) summer times in New York are usually really bad and with all the rain weather you wouldnt have the usual people crowded around a Bronx street corner all night and now with the temperature rising people are back out and tempers are rising as well so I wouldnt be shocked to see the number average out at the end of the summer.

Yonkers is only about 1/6th ghetto this one bad area on the Southwest side which for some reason people associate with the whole city. The rest of the city is a bunch of white suburban kids who think theyre ghetto. Now if that 1/6th was its own city then Yonkers would be like Newark.

I can't stand the white suburban kids who think they're ghetto. My son has a couple of friends like that. Hat sideways, pants down below their underpants, pound and a half of chains around their neck.

Ah yes - the same logic that results in people betting on certain lottery numbers because they haven't come up in a while. Sigh.

Just checked my city, Sydney and the state of New South Wales, with a population of about 7 million, averages about 70 murders a year. Not bad.
Hate to live in Johannesburg, South Africa.

thats funny because I rarely see any white suburban kids at all. I'm pretty sure the majority of yonkers' youth consists of blacks and hispanics.

Hey, if I wanted the statistician's angle on this, I'd hunt you down for it.
The superstitious side of life is just a little more fun! - I know that 'being due' and 'the law of averages' are total farces. :metal:

I work with the NYPD, and I have to go to many of the neighborhoods in this map on a weekly basis. Overall, New York City is a very safe city, however, some areas are pretty awful.
The NYPD breaks Brooklyn into two patrol boroughs "brooklyn south" and "brooklyn north". Brooklyn north contains the two most infamous precincts as far as crime statistics in the city, the 73rd and 75th, which cover East New York, Brownsville, and Weeksville, the three worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn (close to Kennedy airport)
Southeast Queens, including Jamacia and Corona and LeFrak City (the areas border northeast Brooklyn) are consensus for the worst in QB.
As for the cake, the Bronx still takes it. The 40th, 42nd, 44th precincts which line the south bronx are statistically some of the highest crime ares in the city. The 47th, which is encompasses Baychester (directly south of yonkers and mount vernon), is not a wonderful place either. The Bronx is a different beast then the southeast/northeast Brooklyn-Queens matrix. It's much more condensed as it used to be tenements and has a high ratio of NYCHA (housing) buildings.
Oh, and statistically (overall crime stats not just homocides) the safest areas in the city are the police precincts that cover Chelsea (lower west side of manhattan), Bayside Queens, and Bay Ridge Brooklyn.

Where in Yonkers are you?
Wiki: The racial makeup of the city is 57.00% White, 16.61% African American, 0.44% Native American, 4.86% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 13.44% from other races, and 4.42% from two or more races

Damn, I'm from North Jersey and I know where the bad areas of Yonkers are. Getty Square aka "Ghetto Square" was always the worst section when I used to do some work up there. Kinda like a smaller Newark or Paterson.
