ProFootballTalk.com reports that Steelers WR Santonio Holmes will be deactivated by the team for the Week 8 game against the Giants following the Pittsburgh police charging the receiver with possession of marijuana on Thursday

The police stopped Holmes because his vehicle with out-of-town tags matched the description of one "linked to a crime". Smell of burnt marijuana was said to be emanating from the car and three marijuana cigars were turned over by a "cooperative" Holmes, who was said to be not impaired.

Under the NFL policy for a first violation, a player could face a fine or suspension without pay for up to four regular season games.

Nate Washington would likely start for Holmes.

This was incredibly stupid and an unnecessary risk taken by Holmes.

That said, this is fucking retarded. It is completely ridiculous that players can be raging alcoholics and drive drunk all the time without facing much consequence while other guys are getting suspended for having a little pot. What is this, the 1950's?
