About 2 or 3 years ago, I was on a Delta shuttle flight from Ft Lauderdale to NY, sitting in the exit row and someone my size (I'm 6'2" 250lbs) sat next to me. He was dressed nice and had a very large ring on, the person sitting between us asked him about the ring, it was a super bowl ring from '69. I ended up talking to John Schmidt, it was a blast. I have been a fan since 1970 and was able to talk to the person who snapped the ball to my childhood idle. We talked about all the old time Jets (Namath, Boozer, Hill, Maynard etc) The thing that was the most amazing is that all the lineman in his era were smaller then I am. Today 6'6" 320 is nothing, back then he was considered a normal sized lineman.
Anyway anyone else ever meet a Jet player?

Schmidt came into one of my classes at hofstra as a guest. I believe he has a large insurance company now. Very nice guy. I don't think I've met any of the current Jets, I was at a chairty dinner in an elevator with Sean Ellis and Kareen Mckenzie. Two large men.

A good friend of mine and I frequent a place and were friendly with the bartender. Unfortunately, he got into a motorcycle accident in 2003 and passed away. Turns out his son was Chad Pennington's trainer, or one of them, to recoup from the hand injury. We went to the funeral, and who was there? Chad talking to the son. We knew the son, so we went up and said hello, and he introduced us. We spoke to him for about 20-25 minutes, along with some others, after the funeral.

Not counting the dozens of training camp autographs, I've met Johnny Johnson at a Newsday dinner back when I was like 8, I met Namath, Sauer, and Maynard at an autograph show, met Boomer on an LIRR train and talked to him about the jets for about 20 mins, met Matt Snell in a hotel lobby, met Quinn Early at my high school, where he graduated from and came back to visit

No it was at Bungalow 8 which is a club in the city. i had a VIP pass and i guess he had one too because i met him in the VIP section. I was like "how is the 3-4 going?" and he replied "were learning" and then he was like "who is your favorite Linebacker in the Jets" ... i just said "ALL" cuz i didnt want to say VILMA right in front of his face and i didnt want to suck up to him either. This happened before teh season started btw.

When I lived in Arizona I drove a green ford escort station wagon so I had multiple windows to put Jet decals in the windows and I had a Jet license plate. One afternoon I drove to the local record store , as I was getting out of the car this guy drives by in a silver dodge viper with North Carolina plates that read NYJ 29. The guy was also staring at me as I walked towards the plaza. I go into the record store and and the guy also came into the record store. He walked over to me and asked me if I was a Jet fan, I told him I was and he introduced himself to me as Adrian Murrell. This was his 1st year with the AZ Cardinals , he was one of favorites when he was with the Jets and I had season tickets to the Cards as well so he was also my fav on the Cards. He was one of the nicest athletes I ever met. All around nice guy and I was really moved that he introduced himself to me.

I also met Al Toon at Macy's in the Monmouth Mall when I was a kid, I just remember him being very tall.

I went to go see the Jets/Rams a few years ago in Saint Louis and met Rick Lyle's parents at the Arch, does that count?

I also know Matt Snell's cousin, he is a huge horse player here in Vegas.....

I met wayne chrebet in a circuit city around '99. He was kind of a prick. It's funny he looked so small out on the field but next to regular people he looked swole as hell.

I interviewed Nuu Faaola when he was with the London Monarchs and also spoke to Joe Prokop and Brad Quast during World League/American Bowl stints.

Faaola was a great guy, very cheerful and upbeat despite being in, essentially, the minor league.

I went to Iowa University for one year when Quast was there and he was talking about the Airliner bar. He'd just injured his knee and was a bit downbeat as he sat on the treatment table, but he still took the time to speak... probably because he couldn't walk away.

I met John Abraham on a shuttle bus after a flight from Columbia, SC. Personable. It was just after his abdomen issues. He said he was feeling OK. When I shook his hand it was as if he was wearing a baseball glove.
His hands were enormous.

Ironically, I am the only Jet fan in my family and I'm about the only one NOT to have ever met a Jets player. My parents are currently neighbors to Pete Kendall (he lives in Mass.) and see him around once in a while. My wife met Bruce Harper at some resort-type place in CT. She had her picture taken with him and got his autograph.

I've met Chad, Vilma, Chrebet, Santana, Herm, Kareem McKenzie and Terry Bradway. Bradway was actually a great guy. I kept trying to wrap up our convo because I figured he was busy and I was annoying him, but he genuinely wanted to talk and wasn't anything but a normal guy.

Some Notes:
-Chad is the only one of them that smiles in EVERY picture.
-Santana hardly speaks english. He just kept mumbling "y'know what i'm sayin." He's also about 5'6"-5'7", nowhere near 5'9"
-Herm really is one of the nicest guys in the world, but I actually felt dumber after touching him.
-Chrebet may be small, but he will fuck up each and every one of us on this board. I posed for a picture with him, and you could see through his shirt just how ripped his back was.

His hair was fairly restrained when I met him, but he was just getting off a trans-Atlantic flight, so it might have livened up again later that day.

I always liked Rich Miano too.

Who did you interview him for?

It was for First Down. I worked for them from the 1990 season through to 1992, and I was also the editor of Gridiron for a while. I was just learning my trade and we had desktop publishing installed just as I took over the mag. We had half a day's training on Quark and were then told to go and design a magazine. When I look back at those issues now I cringe at how awful they look, but we were doing our best! It was a great job.

The Monarchs were a lot of fun - actually being able to talk to players and coaches and do the job properly was a great experience. Larry Kennan was a tremedous guy - really intelligent, really open and friendly.

Wow! Nice work if you can get it.

It was a total fluke. It was the off-season and I hadn't bought the paper for months. On a whim I picked up a copy and there was an advert for the job of staff writer. It was the only issue the advert appeared in!

I met Keyshawn Johnson while he was a Buccaneer...

He came through my line at Walgreens, and I was stunned...Literally jaw-dropped, the man is wearing a wife-beater on his cell phone, the Saturday night before the game...

I give a "Go Jets." and he says "Yeah man." and smirks, then walks away...

I also met Greg Buttle at the Lions game, got a picture with him.

I met countless players in the late '80's ande arly 90's. I went to Hofstra and a guy we shared a house with in East Meqadow, also a student, was the NYJ Asst. Strength coach. He got me field passes a couple of times for practices. Meeting Kenny O'Brien was awesome.

Best meet though was Dennis Byrd at the Fudruckers in East Meadow. I was wearing my Micley Shuler Jersey and he gave me the thumbs up as he walked by. Before I left I went and talked with him he asked me to sit and we talked football for about a 1/2 hour.

I went to Hofstra and worked a couple of days in the dorms that they were staying back in the mid seventies or so. Met Namath , John Riggins, David Knight, Godwin Turk ( he had this amazin van) John Schmidt, Wayne Chrebet at alumni things when he played for Hofstra and afterwards. Mike D'Amato is on one of the alumni committees with me.

And my favorite Jets experiece at Hofstra. I'm sitting by myself at breakfast one morning at a big round table. When the entire Jets offensive line comes in and one player asks me "Can we sit here?" "Sure." I answered.
They have these giant trays of food and we're chatting away. One player got up and asked "Does anyone want anything?" "Can you get me some bacon, please?" I asked. Students were only given two strips. He came back and handed me a plate of 10 strips of bacon. Cool.

Slightly off topic but I figured I'd also throw this out there...ex-Giants used to play the local PBA in an annual softball game every year. When I was younger (about 12) I had a catch with Wesley Walker in the VIP parking lot before a game.. I'm pretty sure that was the freezing cold 2000 game vs the Colts.... That was really cool...

Also, as a kid I went to a Jets kids clinic, and I saw Wesley again there... Other guys who I met there and ran drills with were Emerson Boozer (he was the coolest old guy I ever met), Dave Herman, Glen Foley, and a bunch of scrubs who were on the team at the time.... It was pretty fun...

I've met a lot of other players briefly outside the players lot, but never spent a significant amount of time talking to any of them except for Marty Lyons and Shaun Ellis....

Edit... I forgot to mention, Kevin Mawae and I chatted at the Jets/Giants training camp a few years ago... He had pink braces, which I poked fun at him for.. He was a really cool guy, absolutely hated that the NFL made him take the cross off of his face mask.... I almost got him to drop some expletives when I brought that up...

So after practice mccriens, ben grahm and laveranues coles. So im like ok coles will do the trick when all of a sudden i here a kid start screaming curtis curtis...so i ran over and waited, i could tell he was gettin a lil agervated because people wouldnt stop shuving things in his face to sign, and when he came by me i was like curtis would u please sign my ball and i held it in my hands...he reached over the fence took the ball from me signed it really nicely and told me to have a good day. I met Gastenaeu once, he was pretty much an ass! Met him in a sporting goods store and he was totally full of himself!

I saw Gastineau a couple years ago outside the stadium after a game, he was signing autographs. Didn't stop to meet him but he was there. Seemed to be cool to all the people who were around him at the moment.

Back in the day I used to hang out regularly with Brad Baxter. recently I have ran into Leonard Marshall and Keith Byers down in Florida. Additionally my in-laws are good friends with Sam Deluca, so I see him socially several times a year.

Back in the day when I was a young lad I worked as a foot messenger in Manhattan. At least once a week I would have to deliver packages to NFL properties in midtown. I met many NFL players as well as the old commissioner Paulie T.

For me it was when I was a kid in summer camp. The head director got Mickey Schuler & Marty Lyons. It was awesome and I was just started to get into football back then as well.

I also met Wesley Walker at a Jets Shop sale at the Meadowlands two years ago.

at a card show on draft day 95 (sorry about the Kyle Brady flashbacks!). I stared at his SB ring. He even asked if I wanted to try it on. What a feeling! My friend said I "looked like his daughter at a boy band concert" My knees were shaking!
