He did some work w/ Iced Earth and was also on the death "Sounds of perserverance" album. I saw him at a death metal show about 6 months back. He was decked out in an old school Death shirt, had a beer in his hand and was headbanging wildly to krisiun and Incantation. It was pretty cool. He's also a great drummer.

Those are 2 bands(especially MA) you really hafta listen to alot to let grow on ya. I reccomend the albums covenant(morbid angel) and the bleeding(cannibal corpse). Those albums are great for people still kinda new to the scene and have alot of catchy classics.
I wanna see Morbid Angel in April so hopefully by then Ill have heard more of their stuff. Ive got nothing against them, in fact I really enjoy Domination, but none of their other stuff has really jumped out at me. But like you said maybe I just need to give them more time. Cannibal Corpse is a bit different though, I shouldve rephrased by above statement. Truth is I like what Ive heard of them but I just dont have alot of it.
And I still dont understand why so many people like that low production sound of Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Deicide, etc. Would the occasional remaster really be too much too ask for??

Keep in mind, when alot of the older corpse, deicide and obituary came out, that was the best production money could buy. Alot of us like it b.c we were into those bands when those albums came out and saw them for what they were. W/ that said, alot of those older albums especially corpse and obituary have been remastered digitally.
By the way, MA is a treat live. They really cature an audience and Pete Sandovol has one of the most solid pair of feet in metal.

Just found this sucker of page 4 and thought I'd resurrect it with some track suggestions for people not as familiar with black metal and interested. Both tracks are from greybeard Norwegian BM bands.
The first is from Emperor: The Eruption from the album Prometheus. Isahn's vocals are insanely good in this track, and it shows their versatility and what they coul actually do with good production, and what gifted musicians they are. Not something all BM bands can translate.
The second is and unorthodox recommendation, from Carpathian Forest's album Black Shining Leather, the song is A Forest. It is an excellent example of how popular the electronic music phenomenon is in Europe and how it bleeds over into everything. Many old school BM artists state their enthusiastic awe of a lot of underground Electronica. Or whatever the hell it is called.
Both tracks can be sampled on Limewire, but buy the album if you like it. These guys aren't rich like American musicians.

I don't get the fascination with metal. Never the less I will post the death metal song:
the best ever death metal band out of denton
were a couple of guys, who'd been friends since grade school.
one was named cyrus, and the other was jeff.
and they practiced twice a week in jeff's bedroom.
the best ever death metal band out of denton
never settled on a name.
but the top three contenders, after weeks of debate,
were satan's fingers, and the killers, and the hospital bombers.
jeff and cyrus believed in their hearts they were headed
for stage lights and leer jets, and fortune and fame.
so in script that made prominent use of a pentagram,
they stenciled their drumheads and guitars with their names.
this was how cyrus got sent to the school
where they told him he'd never be famous.
and this was why jeff,
in the letters he'd write to his friend,
helped develop a plan to get even.
when you punish a person for dreaming his dream,
don't expect him to thank or forgive you.
the best ever death metal band out of denton
will in time both outpace and outlive you.
hail satan!
hail satan tonight!
hail satan!
hail hail!

Well I didn't want to start a whole new thread on this so I guess I'll ressurrect this thread...
Dissection founder and frontman Jon Nodtveidt committed suicide.
crazy bastard (To view links in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. Your post count is 0 momentarily.)
This has been confirmed by their distributor as well.
Its such a goddamn shame that a band that could (should) have been one of the most legendary metal acts was cut short by so much bullshit.
For those who don't know, Jon was jailed for 7 years while Dissection was entering their prime after releasing Storm of the Light's Bane, an album alongside with At the Gates' Slaughter of the Soul defined an entire genre of European metal.
After prison he reformed Dissection with new menbers and released Rienkaos, a good album by most standards but somewhat of a letdown to Dissection fans. He announced that with Rienkaos Dissection had come to a close and "the hungry end is near."
He was never a "nice guy" by any standards but he was a brilliant songwriter and musician and I for one am sorry to see him go.
Edit: Here's the statement from the official website. To view links in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. Your post count is 0 momentarily. (To view links in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. Your post count is 0 momentarily.)
As rumours have started to spread we feel obliged to confirm Jon Nödtveidt's death.
Jon Nödtveidt was a man who lived his life according to his convictions and True Will. A couple of days ago he chose to end his life by his own hands. As a true Satanist he led his life in the way he wanted and ended it when he felt that he had fulfilled his self-created destiny. Not everyone will have understanding or acceptance for his personal path in this life and beyond, but all must respect his choice.
Those of us who have met him in his last days can assure that he was more focussed, happier and stronger than ever. It is our full conviction that he left this world of lies with a scornful laughter, knowing that he had fulfilled everything that he had set up for himself to accomplish. The empty space that he leaves behind will be filled with the dark essence that he manifested through his life and black-magical work. His legacy and Luciferian Fire will live on through those few who truly knew him and appreciated his work for what it really was and still is. As our brother's goal in life and death never was to "Rest in Peace", we will instead wish him victories in all battles to come, until the Acosmic Destiny has been fulfilled.
For the glory of the Dark Gods and the Wrathful Chaos!

As a fan of multiple genres...and I mean multiple...everything from hip hop to classical to classic rock, alternative, emo, punk (real punk), and harder stuff like system of a down and slipknot....what death metal would I enjoy?
For me it's about any sounds that I like, regardless of the label put on it. I just haven't been able to find any super hard music that I can listen to repeatedly because I like it.

Hmm Jtuds I got into metal through slipknot, I then got straight into Cannibal Corpse which is a bit different from other people I know. Maybe some early Sepultura? Morbid Visions was their first LP and I enjoy it. Not really sure though, for me and my mates, it's either you love Death Metal or you don't. That's just what I have experienced
Lots of people, myself included, listened to melodic death metal before we got into the more brutal stuff. That might be a decent starting point. Bands like (older) In Flames, Children of Bodom, Soilwork, etc...might more appeal to you right now

Death metal is not the kind of music you're gonna love the first time you hear it. It takes listening to a few different bands, and the ability to "understand" the music.
I know that sounds corny..but Death metal has a sound like no other music. The vocals often take the role of another instrument rather than a voice over. Try to seperate the music from the vocals as best you can...appreciating it initially just for the music...after awhile...you'll be able to enjoy the vocals as well.

Old Morbid Angel

I haven't bought any Deicide since Serpents of the Light a while ago, havent really heard anything from them since either.
I was just looking for a review of the new one and I noticed that neither of the Hoffmans are it, wonder if there was some falling-out or something.
I ended up buying it the next day. Meh. Whatever. I cant really get into it. I liked the Hoffman brothers more. Some of the solos on the album just seem a bit too "upbeat" for me. On the other hand, Benton's vocals seem to grow more and more sinister with each consecutive album they release. Oh yeah, and Scars of the Crucifix is an okay album as well

I read an interview a while ago from Glen Benton where even he said that he would have people going up to him and shouting "Yeah man, kill the Christians! When Satan rules his world!" and shit and Benton would just want to tell them to grow up.

Hehehe. Thats my only problem with them. Theyre a top ten favorite band of mine nowadays, but I feel that they kinda beat the whole "anti-Christian" schtick to death. Not very original in that respect, but I still like em
On another note, Ive been losing touch with the black metal scene. I was big on BM back in April and May but I sorta drifted away from it. Being anti-christian is the metal way..haha. It dates back to Mercyful Fate and Venom..That's never gonna go away. Once upon the cross was written during a time where that type of imagery was a big seller.
I do think nowadays the themes should be alot more intellectual and correct than "Kill the christians!!! dead!!!".
I myself write alot of lyrics, often of this theme and stuff like old Deicide and Acheron makes me want to cringe.
So since this is a "Metal thread"...which of you metal guys play an instrument? I'm pretty desperate to get something metal going(I do vox and alil bass)..and was just curious

Nah, I know that, but I just find some of some of the lyrics to be so cheesy and corny like you said. Like the new Slayer for example
RELIGION IS HATE!
RELIGION IS FEAR!!
RELIGION IS WAR!!!
RELIGION STOLE MY CANDY!!!!

RELIGION DOESNT CLEAN HIS BEDROOM!!!!!

Speaking of which, I really need to find a new place to get my shit from. Usually I just go looking through stores near my house, where I find some of the more well known stuff like Cannibal Corpse, etc. Amazon is usually where I turn to when I cant find anything I like at a store near me, but there are certain bands I cant find there either. Nargaroth, Woods Of Ypres, and Drudkh, for example. Anybody have any suggestions where I could turn to for this stuff? A website maybe?

Kalmah, Skyfire, Ensiferum, Wintersun, Insomnium, and just about any other Finnish metal band are all better than Children of Bodom anymore. I hope they bounce back but I'm not holding my breath.
Alexi is a maniac on the guitar though.
I've taken a bit of advice and came to the conclusion that Kalmah and Wintersun are damn good bands.
The more I listen, the more I like.
Kalmah is pretty good melodic stuff, although I havent listened to em either since like May. Hades is a sick song, and I had planned on picking up their album Swamplord, but I grew apart from the genre.
Wintersun is pretty sick too, I bought their self titled album a few months ago. Havent really listened to it from beginning to end, but its definitely quality stuff
Id recommend Windir, you might enjoy em, although they might be a little too folkish/black metalish for your tastes. Terje Bakken was a genius, RIP
Ensiferum might appeal to you as well, I think theyre a safer bet

No, being anti-religious inquires no belief in anything.

To my knowledge, love metal's most well known band is H.I.M. I'm not exactly sure what the characteristics of a "love metal" band is, but as far as white metal, that would be the christian shit.
I don't know if I can even classify white metal as a legit metal sub-category.

poison baby, poison
This is random, but did you guys know Trey Azagthoth met his wife online through a Quake III tournament? I thought that was kinda interesting. It doesnt take much to get me going, I know
I thought this review on Amazon for Deicide's Serpent of the Light was kinda funny
People,
wake up for Christ's sake! If you fall for this stuff, you've
been blinded by the evil one! Satan is the father of lies and
a master of deception. You've been seduced by his lies.
Open you eyes to the truth. It's not all relative, there is absolute truth!
God is truth.
Don't you realize that Satan is jealous of us? We have something
that he will never have. We have the possibility of going to Heaven if
we repent and ask God for forgiveness. Jesus loves you more than you can
possibly imagine. Don't blame Him just because we've messed up! Hell exists
and it's infinitely worse than your worst nightmare.
I used to listen to this type of stuff years ago (Slayer, Death etc) and
by the grace of God I was converted. It's the best thing that's ever happened
to me.
Turn back, you're on the road to hell!
Needless to say he gave the album a one out of five :breakdance:

Naglfar and Dissection are both pretty accessible bands
If youre looking for some of the classics...Gorgoroth, Darkthrone, Immortal, Burzum, but theyre somewhat raw and more traditional. Still essential stuff though, if youre just getting your BM sea legs
Behexen and Xasthur are two of the better newer BM bands, but they both have a pretty traditional and raw sound

MayheM - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Graveland - The Celtic Winter

Ive never touched a BC Rich myself, to be honest, so I cant say anything about em performance-wise. But I know someone who owns a Warlock, and supposedly they really do emphasize looks over sound. And IMO they look a tad bit fruity to begin with anyways, so why bother, right? Most likely Im gonna go with a Jackson, but Im also gonna look into an Ibanez, since theyve always intruiged me

Any of you guys ever see Ted Nugent (started off in Detroit, now lives in Texas, but still plays for six months of the year & goes hunting for the rest.)

dISEMBOWELMENT (Transcendence into the Peripheral), Katatonia (Sounds of Decay or Discouraged Ones, they are both good but Katatonia is not really my cup of mud), Sunn O))), OLD Anathema (Serenades, also check out their cover of Pink Floyd's Hope), and Paradise Lost (Gothic) are excellent bands. My opinion on Zakk is, very good musician, i love his sound and he was perfect for ozzy's move towards some stuff that was a little more 80's and very early 90's hair metal (sad but that's what it began to sound like, i still bought it). But it just wasn't the same as Rhoads. :)

He was the hair metal glam era for the Ozzman, saw them at the Spectrum with Motley, Zakk is far from a can of hairspray, but Randy was the man, just a listen to Over the Mountain or Flying High Again makes me a believer:)

You see those leather chaps Kerry King has on - I almost stole those. I was working at the PNC bank Arts Center one summer from college and I was backstage after the first night of a two day Ozzfest and I had to go into Slayer's dressing room for whatever reason. All their shit was hanging all over the place and King's awesome chaps were on a hanger right there just daring me to steal them.
In the end I pussied out and just ate all the Reses Peanutbutter Cups from their snack tray. I should have done it though, I suck.

Hmm, anyone ever hear of a Swedish (non-melodic) death metal band called God Among Insects? I havent checked them out myself yet, but theyre rather new to the scene and what really intruiged me was when I found out that they tune down 11 half steps. They have the drummer from Vomitory and Dark Funeral's legendary vocalist Emperor Magus Caligula, so the lineup seems pretty solid. Their first album got some pretty good reviews too, "World Wide Death". Ill try to look em up once my computer stops being such a skank

Also my gf sometimes wonders why I refer to grocery stores as "food libraries" in a Scandinavian accent.
I haven't seen that show in a while, I hope the first season comes out on DVD soon.
Speaking of Mayhem, I only just picked up their Live in Leipzig album yesterday. Maybe its just me, but I really think that Hellhammer sounds better live than he does in studio.

So metalheads what are your top albums of 2006? Here's mine:
Amorphis - Eclipse | Amorphis' best album in 10 years since Elegy and very accessible.
Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis | Man, Decapitated really have mastered the art of playing tight, technical death metal but still brutal as fuck. I like the new singer better too. Great overall album.
Agalloch - Ashes Against the Grain | I never get tired of folk metal and Agalloch certainly doesn't disappoint with their new one. They don't rely as heavily on the acoustic and classical guitars as with The Mantle which is an improvement IMO.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some so lets hear them.
Hmm.... my top 5, in order...
1) Spawn of Possession - Noctambulant (IMO its by far the best of '06... I highly recommend it)
2) Vader - Impressions in Blood (has some cheesy moments, but overall a solid release)
3) Decapitated - Organic Hallucinosis (I liked Sauron alot more than Covan on vocals, but still great stuff)
4) Keep of Kalessin - Armada (dude, silent scream, common man, how could you leave this off your list)
5) Krisiun - AssasiNation (its Krisiun... nuff said)
Ive heard from alotta people that the new Corpse album (Kill) was actually pretty awesome. I might pick that up.
As for the new Deicide... meh, I actually think its tremendously overrated. Owen and Santolla may be better guitarists than the Hoffman brothers, but Im probably one of the few who prefers the Hoffmans to the new crew. The solos just sound too exotic and too different from what Ive grown to expect from Deicide. Theyd sound better on some fruity DragonForce record, at least in my ears.

I heard the same about Kill. I've been meaning to pick it up.
As for Deicide I keep hearing good things about the new album despite it being Deicide.
I'm definitely going to have to check out Spawn of Possession.
As for the Decapitated signer I didn't dislike the old guy he was good but the new guy just sounds so pissed off, I guess it just suits me better.

I was actually a tad apprehensive after I heard Caligula's vocals on Attera Totus Sanctus, but I think he may have been purposely striving for that sound, as opposed to it being a result of him blowing out his voice like I had previously thought. In other words, he sounded fine live.
