View Full Version : Whoa! Varitek is out.

ESPN is reporting that Varitek needs surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee, and will be out for at least a month.

That's big news for Boston and the Yankees. As much as I dislike Varitek, and him I legitimately dislike, more than Manny, Ortiz, and pre-Met Pedro all rolled into one, he is a huge piece of their puzzle. That's going to hurt them. It's going to be interesting to see how Mirabelli handles the everyday duties when he has never started more than 6 games in a row.

its also fairly old to be reporting it at 10:44. but yes not good for boston fans.

Varitek is having a pretty poor year, but Mirabelli has been even worse.

the team asked him to wear it, idk why a lot of people have a problem with it.

Regardless of his performance, the Sox are a better team with him in. He is a very solid catcher, and he is always dangerous enough at the plate that he warrants respect.

I don't give a crap about his big C. We have a captain too. The key is both players take that role seriously.

That's the bottom line--anything that hurts the Red Sox benefits the Yankees and no matter how bad a season Varitek is having he's 30 times better than the Doug Mirabelli/Ken Huckaby platoon that is developing up there. Another crucial blow to Boston.

BTW the reason I have a problem with Varitek wearing the "C" on his jersey is because it's totally unecessary. Everyone knows that you're the captain, you don't have to advertise yourself...it strikes me as downright arrogant. But then again I am very biased against Fairytek.

Lol I feel like thats the reason most Yankees fans dislike it. If DJ wore a C, clearly you wouldn't have a problem. It works for all teams though. I would be pissed if say Chipper was named Capn of the braves and wore a C. Thats the beauty of a rivalry though, finding the most insignificant things to hate on a team for haha.

When he first started wearing it last year, it was enormous. It was really funny, that's why I started saying that. I couldn't care less if he wears the "C" or not.

I have an issue with anybody who wears the "C" (though the only ones that I can think of are Varitek and Mike Sweeney.) Of course you're right, if Jeter wore it I'd embrace it because I'm a shameless homer.

But I stand (most of the time) on principle

Yeah, this is not good news. In regards to the C, he didn't choose it, that's what the team gave him, so I don't see how it's arrogant.

I'm pretty sure that Epstien wouldn't have traded him if he asked not to wear the "C" but that's beside the point.

To replace Varitek on the roster the Red Sox called up Ken Huckaby, who is hitting around .200 in Pawtucket. That's news to make any Yankee fan smile.

That was just a silly comment. He is the team captain. What should we call him? Sugar-shorts?

While he's not having a great year, Varitek is a huge loss for the Sox. With the talk of him asking for his release I would not be surprised to see a waiver deal for Javy Lopez coming.

No way. Varitek is only going to be out a month, then what do you do with Lopez, especially since you have to have Mirabelli on the roster to catch Wakefield?

Varitek asked for a release? Really? I hadn't heard that at all. I can't imagine why he would. He is the official leader of a legitimate playoff contender. One which he has already helped bring a title to. That's crazy.

Can anyone confirm this? Not that I don't believe you deviljets7, I am just shocked. I haven't heard this before now.

How about Derek Jeter? Sounds like a good name to call him by.

I must not have written it clearly enough. Javy Lopez asked for his release

If Varitek's going to be out a month, by the time he's back the rosters will have expanded so there's room to carry all 3. Lopez is also a free agent after the season so there aren't any long term issues with the move. I know he's not the player he used to be, but when the alternative is Mirabelli/Ken Huckaby it's a no brainer IMO.

My bad. I misunderstood what you were saying. Not that I would complain if Varitek quit on the Sox, but I would have an extremely hard time believing it.
