The White Sox are "extremely close" to trading for Nationals outfielder Alfonso Soriano, a source close to the situation told ESPN's Tim Kurkjian.
No word yet on what the Nationals would get in return, but they're surely interested in Brandon McCarthy, Brian Anderson and Josh Fields. If the White Sox get Soriano, they'll likely use Scott Podsednik as their primary center fielder, with Anderson perhaps platooning with him if he sticks around. Jul. 24 - 3:23 pm et

I don't know why so many yankee fans wants Soriano again. I remember a number of fans ready to kill him after his performance(or lack thereof) in the playoffs three years ago. And now to bring him back to help with a playoff push? I don't get it.

MLB should move the non-waiver trade deadline to August 15 next season.

July 31 just doesn't cut it anymore.
With the advent of wild cards, there are too many teams still in the playoff race on July 31.

In the AL, 10 out of 14 teams are still alive. Cleveland, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, and Kansas City are done.

In the NL, 13 out of 16 teams still have a shot. (I'm not counting Washington, who is only 9 games out of a wild card spot.)

Both West divisions are up for grabs. Seattle and Colorado are in last place, but can win the divisions.

Philadelphia and Florida and Houston and Milwaukee and Los Angeles are only 5 games behind Cincinnati in the loss column.

Maybe this next week will knock another team or two out of the picture, but it's not like the pre-1994 days when half the teams' postseason dreams were extinguised at this time of the year.

Some of these teams are going to have to do what the White Sox did in 1997 and be sellers even though they are only a few games out.

Soriano is also very close or at double digits in errors... in the outfield. The last thing the Yankees need to do is overpay for a big bat. What would you deal for him Koopa? Be ready to move Wang, Cano, or Hughes.
