Well my PS2 died over the weekend. It will not load any discs, it just goes straight to the browser configuration screen. I assume there is a problem with the dvd/cd drive or the laser. I tried a can of air to blow it out but that accomplished nothing. I haven't been able to find any local repair shop as of yet, so my question is does anyone recommend any particular online repair place, or any places that I definately should NOT use. Thanks for your help guys/gals.

YOu're probably better off just buying a new one then repairing it.

That is more and more looking like my best choice, thanks.

Did you try other games or just one?

I tried 4, I knew after 2, but the wishful thinking made me try 2 more just in case.

If you're leaning towards a new one, might as well take it apart a little and clean the laser and see if you can fix it.

I will have to find some instructions on how to take it apart. I couldn't find 1 visible screw anywhere on that thing. Sony went to a lot of trouble to make it unuser friendly when it comes to taking the PS2 apart.

Go to Best Buy and get xbox 360... actually Costco is now selling 360 with another wireless controller, PGR 3, rechargable battery pack, and remote...

Actually, when I called up Sony (I had a disk reading problem) they fixed it for free.

If you end up deciding to buy a new one take the broken one to Gamestop or EBGames. They buy used PS2's for $50. If they remember to test it out they'll charge you a $15 refurb fee but you'll still get $35 out of the broken one to put towards buying a new one or as some people suggested, a 360.

Thanks for all the great advice, now I am really leaning toward just buying another gaming system, but I may try calling Sony and see what happens. That would save me a lot of money for the time being. If I get a XBox 360 b4 my son all hell may break loose.

Your not talking about the slim ps2, i hope.

Turn the ps2 over and the bottom you'll see six or 8 squares. Use a flathead screw driver and remove the squares. NOw you see your screws. Remove them all.

turn it back over and mess around with it.

If your going to buy a new one get The same big one . The slim version eats a$$

I've both went through Sony and then last time, after sending it off for a month to be cleaned... I opened it and cleaned the laser myself. It IS the laser and a common problem... google will have a lot of info on how to clean it.

Thanks, it's definately worth a shot. I certainly can't make it any worse. :)

I am gonna try this tonight and see if cleaning the laser will fix the problem. And I have the big PS2 not the new slim one.

sounds like laser has gone , mine did the same thing and I bought another laser off ebay , its dead easy to fix.
If you open up the back of your playstation and look at the laser it will have a code on the side of it , use that code on ebay and pick one up cheap.

Thanks for the help and advice. I opened up the PS2 and blew all the dust out (it was filthy). I then cleaned the laser with some alcohol and cotton swab. This did the trick. It is working again and better than ever. It has stopped the skipping that it would do every now and then. I really appreciate you guys for helping.

When this happened to my sons playstation...I did a little searching..and it worked.

It takes some work..but anyone having problems with certain games loading..its the mechanism that determines the level of the cd. this worked very well for me.
