The Dolphins' search for a new quarterback intensified Saturday, when an early morning visit to free agent Drew Brees led to lengthy evening discussions with Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper.

The Dolphins are expected to have a new quarterback by the end of today, two sources said. The decision on which quarterback — Brees or Culpepper — will be based on today's meeting with Brees in South Florida.
The Dolphins, who anticipate landing one of the two, began courting Brees shortly after sunrise Saturday, the first day of free agency, a source said.

After the meeting on Saturday, Brees boarded a plane at noon to meet with the New Orleans Saints. He was to stay overnight, meet with the Saints again in the morning, then fly to South Florida for a more extensive meeting with the Dolphins.

Nick Saban and Randy Mueller did not want Brees to accept an offer from the Saints without talking to them, the source said, prompting their early flight. New Orleans is expected to offer a large amount of guaranteed money to Brees.

Rumors also swirled through league circles that Culpepper, who tore three ligaments in his knee in a game last year, traveled from his Orlando home to meet with the Dolphins in Davie. While those rumors couldn't be confirmed, discussions between the two parties did take place, several sources said.

Miami quarterback Sage Rosenfels visited the Texans on Saturday and agreed to a four-year, $7 million contract. That deal included a $2 million signing bonus, according to an NFL source

PLEASE be Culpepper although Brees could be damaged goods so that may not turn out well either.

I'm excited. Living here in Miami, I have a soft spot for the Fins. They are my home-town team after all.

Let it be Brees.... BREES TO CHAMBERS! TD!

Why couldn't they say "in the morning"?Why did they have to make it sound like a romance novel?

hopefully if the Dolphins get Culpepper he'll screw up like last year huh? (except I don't hope that will happen...because my grandpa is a Dolphins fan and when I was little and stupid I was one too....until I came to my senses and became a Bronco fan.)

I hope whoever it is does well. It's better for the Jets to be in a division with 4 good teams than 3 weak ones and us (on the premise that we're working towards the Jets being good one day), especially in the view of hardening our team for the playoffs.

Per PFT,

BREES DOESN'T WANT TO JOIN SAINTS

The scuttlebutt in league circles is that quarterback Drew Brees doesn't want to join the Saints, but that he's talking to them in the hopes of driving up the offer made by his preferred destination, the Miami Dolphins.

Word is that the Saints envision Brees as a short-term starter who would handle the job while Matt Leinart or Vince Young or Jay Cutler get ready to play. As a result, the Saints are offering the kind of deal that Kurt Warner signed two seasons ago in New York as Eli Manning got ready to play -- a two-year contract that is essentially a one-year deal.

The problem is that the Fins don't want to pay the same kind of money in 2006 that the Saints are willing to invest. Instead, Miami is giving Brees the opportunity to earn big money over the long term.

So the Saints are banking on Brees' shoulder being fully healed in time for the 2006 season, and the Dolphins are being more cautious.

In the end, Brees' best play might be to take less money in the short term with an organization that is far better equipped to succeed over the long haul

That's an interesting theory, since it's usually a big advantage to be a division winner and get a first-round bye (Pittsburgh this year notwithstanding).

Why on earth would you the Jets want to be in a division of 4 good teams instead of being good and having 3 other bad division teams?

Is some sort of strange Scottish logic I'm missing?

Holy Moley.

(Just pointing it out, but on the first page of a google image search for "drew brees", you get responses from outsports and femmefan.)

Probably. 3 good divisional opponents = 6 tough games a year. Now on the premise that we all want the Jets to be the best team, the harder the regular season schedule the more prepared we are for the playoffs. Just my opinion, but I'd rather win a strong division than do what the Colts did this year and cruise through, but not have the toughness to perform in the post season.

But 3 weak teams + the jets is good for me too.

Well I would rather go 6-0 in my division (regardless of the calibur of opponent) and make the playoffs than to go 3-3, miss the playoffs and lament our close losses in which "we played tough"

I'll take my chances in the playoffs.

Oh, by the way, if you go 6-0 in your division I promise you will get a HOME playoff game.

True, but I am not fan of all teams.

See it's easy for you guys. Most of you live in NY, and like the Jets.

I'm a Buc fan. Period. However I live in Miami. I hear and see Dolphin everywhere. And when the Fins win my city is happy and good things happen, making me happy. The Fins are not in my division, not in my conference, and don't bother the bucs at all. Granted if it's Fins v Bucs, fins can go to hell.

But if there is a Fins v ___ game going on that does not effect the Bucs in any which way, whats wrong with me hoping the Fins win? Do I have to be totally impartial about the rest of the NFL except the bucs? Is it wrong that I can get joy from another teams victory? If you prick me, do I not bleed?

"...That decision could come as early as today if negotiations strike the right chord -- and for Brees that means $10 million per year and $10 million in guarantees. The Dolphins were offering approximately $5 million to $7 million in guarantees two days ago.

If the gap isn't bridged, Brees likely will be heading back to New Orleans, and the Dolphins will fall back to what is clearly their second option:

Somehow acquiring Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper."

There's that word "own" again. I thought you guys were past that stage, and realized "the streak" had finally ended??? You haven't owned Miami since then, and how many years ago did that end???..

We'll see who owns who, but as long as we keep splitting the series, it's a push, not ownership...

yea, i tend to agree. why the hell would anyone want to go 3-3 and not make the playoffs then just bitch about how good they would have been if they were in another division or whatever. id much rather beat up on a weak division and go to the playoffs and see how it goes from there, even if it does end up in a loss

Yeah, but I'm working on the premise that the Jets go 6-0 against the division anyway, and saying that it's better to have practice beating good teams and winning the division than beating up on nobodies. It's character building!
