Draft Order as of 11/22/06
1. Detroit Lions- QB Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
The days of Joey Harrington are finally over, but now what? This disgusting offense needs a lift, and they’ll get one from a promising young QB that will likely compete with Kitna for the starting job right away.
2. Arizona Cardinals- OT Joe Thomas, Wisconsin
This offense has a ton of talent at the skill positions and at QB, but the OL gives them absolutely no time to do anything. Joe Thomas is as good of a prospect as Robert Gallery was a few years ago, and he’s going to the desert.
3. Oakland Raiders- WR Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech
Randy Moss may be a step over the hill, Jerry Porter will likely been in another uniform in 2007, and this WR core all of a sudden looks very bare. They have bigger needs, but Calvin Johnson is too much value to even think about passing up on.
4. Houston Texans- HB Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma
Dominack Davis is good, but also very injury prone and can’t be depended on anymore. Adrian Peterson is drawing comparisons to Eric Dickerson, and yea he was pretty good. His only question mark is he is a tad injury prone – but with Davis and Peterson taking the load off of each other they’ll be an unstoppable duo. All they need is a little bit of depth behind Andre Johnson (who has done virtually everything for this offense in the passing game) and they’ll be an offense to be reckoned with.
5. Washington Redskins- DE Gaines Adams, Clemson
After falling flat on its face, it’s time for this team to rebuild. Through Week 11, Washington is dead last in the NFL with 13 sacks. To generate some more pass rush, they’ll pick up Gaines Adams, who is a pass rushing machine.
6. Cleveland Browns- WR Ted Ginn Jr., Ohio State
They’ll give Brohm serious consideration, and then determine that this is still Charlie Frye’s show. Edwards and Winslow are both great targets, but they have no one else able to catch the ball. So to give Frye another tool to work with, they’ll take the dynamic and blazing fast Ted Ginn Jr., who will also assist their below average kick return game.
7. Tampa Bay Bucs- QB Brian Brohm, Louisville
Gradkowski is not the answer, and Simms really wasn’t either before his injury. Brian Brohm has guided one of the best NCAA offenses for a few years now, and he’ll have an opportunity to be the best QB in franchise history very quickly.
8. Tennessee Titans- DE Quentin Moses, Georgia
Kyle Vanden Bosch is a very good player at one end, but there is air at the other end. Moses is very good in the run supporting game as well as the pass rushing, and will likely start from Day 1.
9. Minnesota Vikings- OT Sam Baker, USC
The ride side of this offensive line is very bad, and they decide to go the super unit route with Baker.
10. St. Louis Rams- OLB/ILB Paul Posluszny, Penn State
This linebacker core is decent as best, and the addition of Posluszny gives them options. They can either start him outside or bring him inside, moving Witherspoon back outside.
11. Green Bay Packers- CB Leon Hall, Michigan
There’s absolutely nothing after Charles Woodson and Al Harris, who are both on the wrong side of 30. Leon Hall is a legitimate #1 corner.
12. Miami Dolphins- S LaRon Landry, LSU
Renaldo Hill and Yeremiah Bell are starting for the Dolphins at safety. Enough said. Landry would have probably been taken at #8 instead of Whitner had he declared last year, and he draws comparisons to Ed Reed.
13. Pittsburgh Steelers- HB Kenny Irons, Auburn
Willie Parker is very small and cannot take 20-25 carries a game for too long. After losing Bettis last year, the Steelers will now acquire a big bruising back to replace him. Irons is not the best running back left on the board, but he is a perfect compliment to Parker and is a much better overall fit.
14. Buffalo Bills- OT Jake Long, Michigan
There is little to no talent at the LT position, although Jason Peters is a special player on the right side. They’ll get Jake Long to be their left tackle for a long, long time.
15. Atlanta Falcons- WR Dwayne Jarrett, USC
Vick needs a true #1 option to get the ball to, and Jarrett is very talented and drawing comparisons to Chris Carter
16. New York Jets- HB Marshawn Lynch, California
After overhauling the OL in last year’s draft, the Jets replace Curtis Martin with Marshawn Lynch, a dynamic, playmaking player that the Jets desperately lack.
17. San Francisco 49ers- DT Alan Branch, Michigan
There are a few holes on this defense, and a 3-4 DT leads the way
18. Philadelphia Eagles- CB Marcus McCauley
A position that lacks depth for the Eagles, and McCauley is a slightly better prospect then former teammate Richard Marshall was a year ago.
19. Cincinnati Bengals- DE Victor Abiamiri, Notre Dame
The Bengals defense has been very bad in the 2006 season, mostly caused by the lack of pass rush that allows the team to be picked apart. Abiamiri may be a little bit of a reach, but he’ll be a fantastic player on the other side of Justin Smith.
20. Dallas Cowboys- WR Jeff Samardzija, Notre Dame
Terrell Owens is… well Terrell Owens, and Terry Glenn is fantastic but getting older and older by the minute. Samardzija is a top WR prospect that will be Romo’s main target for many years.
21. New England Patriots (from Seattle)- WR Sidney Rice, South Carolina
The Patriots have had many good WRs leave over the past few years, and the top target remaining, Troy Brown, is very close to reaching the hill. Sidney Rice is a gamebreaking WR that will give Tom Brady the best go-to guy he’s had.
22. Carolina Panthers- ILB Patrick Willis, Ole Miss
Word is that Dan Morgan’s injury may end his career, and if it does then Willis will be able to step in right away at the MLB position. If they have good reason to think that Morgan will be fine, then expect a S, OLB, or Zach Miller instead.
23. New Orleans Saints- DT Frank Okam, Texas
Interior line is beyond terrible for this team, and help is needed badly and immediately. Okam was a legit top 10 pick in everyone’s pick during the preseason, and after a mediocre senior season he’s still a top, run stuffing prospect.
24. Jacksonville Jaguars- OT/OG Justin Blalock, Texas
Rumor is that Del Rio is unhappy with the play of his entire offensive line, and that everyone is playing for their jobs at this point. Since there’s no outside linebacker prospect that juts out at this point, the Jags will take a versatile OL who is good value and will play at LG, RG, or RT.
25. Kansas City Chiefs- DT Quinn Pitcock, Ohio State
The KC Chiefs have a lot of duds playing DT right now, and Herman Edwards seems to love his defensive lineman. Pitcock is a guy rising up everyone’s draft board, and may go before Okam on draft day.
26. New York Giants- HB Michael Bush, Louisville
This is of course pending that Tiki Barber actually retires, which becomes more likely with every Coughlin bashing. If he leaves it’s a no brainer, if he doesn’t this is another team looking for DT and CB help.
27. New England Patriots- CB Darrelle Revis, Pittsburgh
New England has survived the post-Ty Law era in a limping fashion, and if it wasn’t for their fantastic front 7 this secondary would have been exposed already. But before it does, New England brings in a top corner with shutdown potential.
28. Denver Broncos- S Michael Griffin, Texas
John Lynch has had a so-so year and is going to fall big time at some point, and the other safety spot has average talent. Griffin is a top playmaker that will hit very, very hard – much like the man he’ll replace.
29. San Diego Chargers- S Aaron Rouse, Virginia Tech
This becomes a yearly thing – San Diego selecting a defensive back with its first round pick. They’d much rather have a WR, but since there isn’t any more top talents available they’ll take another great, hard hitting defensive back to help their mediocre secondary, and likely look to acquire a top WR through trade (Jerry Porter?)
30. Baltimore Ravens- QB Drew Stanton, Michigan State
Boller is not a long term answer, and McNair is a one or two year fix. Stanton is very mobile and accurate with a pretty strong arm as well, and he’ll now be slated as Baltimore’s QB of the future.
31. Chicago Bears- TE Zach Miller, Arizona State
Miller is a fantastic receiving option that will help Grossman and the Bears’s increasingly better passing game to be a little bit less inconsistent on a week to week basis.
32. Indianapolis Colts- DT DeMarcus Tyler, North Carolina St.
Anthony McFarland is getting old, and they still need a big loaf next to him to help clog the middle in one of the league’s worst rushing defenses.
Other Jets First Day Picks
2a. DE/OLB LaMarr Woodley, Michigan
2b. FB Brian Leonard, Rutgers
3. DE Adam Carriker, Nebraska
1. Detroit Lions- QB Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
The days of Joey Harrington are finally over, but now what? This disgusting offense needs a lift, and they’ll get one from a promising young QB that will likely compete with Kitna for the starting job right away.
