View Full Version : David Wells traded to San Diego
David Wells' agent confirmed that the left-hander has been dealt from the Red Sox to the Padres.
"He's a Padre," Gregg Clifton said. "He's thrilled to be heading back to San Diego and, hopefully, helping get them into the playoffs." MSNBC.com is reporting that the Red Sox will get George Kottaras back. However, since Kottaras is on the 40-man roster, it might be that he won't be officially included until after the season. He'd have to make it to Boston on waivers to be traded now, and despite how far the Red Sox have fallen, they still have a much better record than the Devil Rays. Aug. 31 - 7:41 pm et

Interesting to see the Sox in full "give up" mode. Of course, so were the Phils, and look what's happened there.

Does David Wells throw from the mound or has he become the mound?

5 starts in August: 34 IP, 2.65 ERA, 1.35 WHIP. Just sayin'.

Wait. So they did the same trade that got them David Wells only to send him back to SD?

They never traded for Wells. He was a free agent.

They traded Mirabelli for Loretta, then when Bard couldn't catch Wakefield the Padres screwed the Sox big by taking Bard AND Cla Meredith to get Mirabelli back. Now they are apparently giving them a catching prospect who I personally don't think will be very good, at least offensively.
So basically it was Bard, Meredith, and Wells for Loretta and Kottaras. Ugh.

Kottaras was a top catching prospect that we bought for a month's worth of David Wells - a guy who was two slices of pie away from baseball retirement two months ago.
And, let's be practical here - the first Mirabelli trade was a great deal. The second one was kneejerk stoopidity. This deal brings everything back into line.

I agree wholeheartedly with the part about the first Mirabelli trade. I hate Mirabelli. And I would have loved to keep Bard to see what he could do with you know, some time to actually ADJUST to catching a guy who is probably the hardest guy to catch of his generation. But I don't see this as a very good deal given that the Dodgers apparently were talking Andy LaRoche PLUS another prospect. I hope that that was just a rumor and not something Epstien turned down because he wanted a catcher instead.
Who knows, maybe Kottaras will pan out, but he seems to have taken a step back this season at the plate.

Depending on the time of year and the state of the Sox, it's either gluttony for punishment or right-headedness.
