Jon Lester apparently is being tested for cancer. If I was on the Sox at this point I'd demand a release for fear of being disfigured or something.

More like the Curse of the Gorilla Suit. I can't wait for Epstien to be unceremoniously fired.

You just have to hope that this is just the Boston media overreacting to tests of a different nature (it wouldn't be the first time that Dan Shaughnessy was accused of sensationalism.)

On an unrelated note, with Lester apparently out of the rotation will David Pauley take his place? What happened to that dude?

Sit down. This may shock you. I mean it.

Pauley.

Is on the DL.

This is just insane. Boston has worse luck than the 2005 Jets.

I figured as much.

Here's to 86 more years of Yankee domination

Jeez, this is getting ridiculous. The bad luck just continues to pile on the BoSox.

Who would have ever thought this team would fall apart the way they have. Even before the injuries, we are talking about roughly a 13 game swing in less than 45 days?

You look at the second game of the doubleheader and get a bit ticked off that Torre chose not to bring Mo in the game..and they you start to say to yourself..its resting time in the bronx.

I know it would be sweet to pass the Tigers...but its great to finally be able to sit back a bit and rest some players.

Yeah, like Proctor and Villone.

Oh, wait. Nevermind.

Why are you obsessed with the 1 seed?....If the Yanks are 2, then they get CHI...If they are 1 ...they get Chi......As far as the Tigers go, I am confident we can take them in a 7 game series...

I know Villone has been getting kudos..and hes your typical 162 game reliever to eat innings...but let me tell you something...3-3, 7th inning against the white sox..and in marches Villone...I would go in to another room and not even have the balls to watch it.

Proctor..hit or miss..he will get important innings in the playoffs. I can see him getting key outs in 2 games and blowing 1. Thats Proctor. Just that blowing 1 in a 7 game series is tough to take.

Lets face it..along with the rest of the major league, not too many teams have those guys that can eat up the 7th and 8th innings....except the Angels perhaps..and they are probably not going to be there anyway..thank God.

Thats true.

Quite honestly..if we get past the White Sox...I would be very surprised if the Tigers are still standing anyway.

jaywayne said it's great to sit back and rest some players. I "sarcastically" said Proctor and Villone. I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, it has nothing to do with my comment about resting Proctor and Villone. Infact, my intentions were for Proctor and Villone to be rested more in the regular season, which would mean I really don't care about the #1 seed. Regardless of that, since when have I been obsessed with the 1 seed? I've been the one saying all night in another thread I think the Yankees are better than all the playoff teams in the AL.

Wow, that sucks.

My best wishes go out to him, this is getting quite insane down in Boston.

Damn. That's just insane. I despise Boston, but could any team have worse luck at this point? Sure, I like winning the division, but I don't exactly want it like this. Good luck to Lester. That's a crappy turn of events.

Best of luck to Lester with whatever may or may not be wrong with him.

As for the Red Sox...

Thanks to the apparent trade of Fat Slob David Wells, tonights starter will be Julian Tavarez. Unreal.

devilonthetownhallroof
08-31-2006, 06:05 PM
I think the Tavarez thing is only a formality. Wells hasn't been officially traded, so he's still on the roster and that means there's no room for the REAL expected starter, Lenny DiNardo, who would have to be activated from the DL.

Well, NESN just read a statement from Lester's family saying that he has been diagnosed with a treatable form of lymphoma. Hopefully he recovers quickly from this.

devilonthetownhallroof

I looked up the kind he has, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and it looks like he'll need chemo and then radiation. They were saying it's fortunate in a way he was in a minor car accident recently, since he hurt his back, leading to tests.

Wow, that is lucky. My wife had a miscarriage a while back, and it led to her being diagnosed with pre-cancerous cells in her uterus. Sometimes bad things are a blessing.

Good luck to him and God Bless. Fortunately, it sounds treatable, and you can't ask for more than that.

AWAITING DAVID ORTIZ PRESS CONFERENCE

EDIT: Bah!! This is ridiculous. Scaring the crap out of Red Sox Nation. It's just a "David's Going to Be Fine" presser. Waste of friggin' time.

I heard last night that Ortiz is gonna be held out of today's game and play on Sunday. I don't know if that's accurate though.

Whitesox and Twins did lose though.

So the Red Sox should still have hope. Only 5.5 games back.

As of last night, they announced that Ortiz is wearing a heart monitor and should not play at all this weekend. They will look at the results on Monday, and make a determination based on the results.

I just turned on ESPN News. Waiting to see the deal with Ortiz press conference. The Breaking News only says Papelbon to have a MRI Monday.

I guess I had given up the Sox for dead at this point, so whether Ortiz comes back tomorrow or Tuesday doesn't seem so crucial to me (I'm assuming that the doctors are correct, and there is nothing seriously wrong with him). The Lester thing is of course awful, but hopefully he will recover.

Purely from the baseball point of view, the Papelbon situation seems most serious. If the Sox ended up doing real damage to the shoulder of their top pitching prospect by using him as the closer this year, that could hurt them for years to come.
